Junge Deutsche Oper | (c) Dorothea Tuch
…to our busy studio devoted to all manner of experimentation in the field of musical theatre! There are new, fresh things going on at the Junge Deutsche Oper. This is the place where famous works are done differently and young people are allowed and encouraged to get their hands dirty. In the first part of our 2012/13 season we will be presenting over 20 productions, projects, concerts and interactive events ranging from The Trip to Panama ( / read more ) to Mahlermania ( / read more ), from our concerts for babies ( / read more ) to the DJ Opera ( / read more ), all aimed not only at people whose interest in opera has recently been tweaked but also at knowledgeable fans of musical theatre. And as a venue for our many and varied activities we've put down roots in the Tischlerei, the new studio space in the Deutsche Oper Berlin. Like to take a peek behind the scenes or even tread the boards yourself? Not a problem: with us there are heaps of opportunities to see what it's like backstage or on stage and give your input on the themes that interest you - for young children as one of our Opernmäusen ( / read more ) and for the older youngsters as members of the Youth Club ( / read more ), the Children's Chorus or as part of our youth project The Ring: Next Generation ( / read more ) on the main stage.
We are also looking forward to organising exchanges with school classes of all ages and collaborating with teachers like you to give young people a deeper insight into musical theatre. In the Opera & School ( / read more ) section you will find a wide range of activities designed for the period prior to your introductory visit and as a follow-up. Be it workshop projects, a talk with experts, sitting in on a rehearsal or a tour through the opera house, we are happy to advise. Whether busy on stage, backstage or in front of the stage, we are all raring to launch into an exciting new season, so see you there!

Tours and Family Tours
Tours and Family Tours
Our tours through the auditorium, props store and costume room and across the stages afford a fascinating insight into the Deutsche Oper Berlin and the everyday goings-on behind the scenes. What thinking went into the architectural complex concealed behind the long, exposed-aggregate concrete façade on Bismarckstraße? What goes into designing a stage set? What happens at rehearsals? How and where are the precious costumes administered? Visitors will also learn some lesser-known details of the eventful history of the opera house, which, with its new, modern productions and its repertoire of early treasures, provides a cross-section of more than 40 years of productions and performances.

Augenblick mal! Festival

F22nd – 27th April 2013
Festival fever in the Tischlerei!
Advance ticket sales from 18th February 2013*
Information on all “Augenblick mal! events available here.
Welcome to the 12th edition of “Augenblick mal!” – the drama festival for young audiences.
An opportunity for Berlin school children, their families and national and international drama professionals to enjoy ten outstanding performances by German children's and youth theatre. Six curators selected the productions, which this year give prominence to performative styles and the issue of multilingualism. Audiences are confronted with a range of strong narratives, most of which were developed as collaborations. These three top-notch international productions from Ireland, Croatia and Hungary indicate a new politicisation of theatre for young audiences, with all three productions taking stale, outdated structures and attempts at social reform as their themes.
Meetings and discussions are being organised with the respective creators. The opening event and the Assitej Gala celebrate drama for children and teenagers as an indispensable aspect of culture. Tickets to the 2013 Berlin Children's Drama Awards ceremony are being allotted by prize draw. On the last night of the Festival the GRIPS Theatre is hosting a special Bonustrack open-stage night. Epicentre of the Festival is the Theater an der Parkaue, the venue for stimulating encounters and discussions.

The Ring: Next Generation I
The Ring: Next Generation I

Der Ring: Next Generation © Deutsche Oper Berlin
Youth project, based on THE RING OF THE NIBELUNG and compositions by Alexandra Holtsch
In 2013, the year of Wagner celebrations, the Deutsche Oper Berlin invites 60 young people to team up with a production crew, a composer, classical musicians and singers to create an experimental evening of musical theatre. The work centres on Richard Wagner's monumental musical epic THE RING OF THE NIBELUNG, a story not only about a cursed ring, broken agreements, foregone love and a thirst for power but also of conflict between parents and their children, with the hopes of the parents in this RING resting on the next generation. The hope of the elder generation is that their children will put the world to rights for them. In THE RING: NEXT GENERATION Wagner's characters are placed in direct confrontation with the present day "next generation's" approach to life. The music likewise combines the two worlds: stirring, original Wagner issuing from the orchestra pit meets electronic music and ultra-hip sounds served up from the turntable of DJ Alexandra Holtsch and DJ Panacea.

30. Nov.; 2., 23. (2x), 28. Dec.Since its creation in 2008, the Children's Chorus of the Deutsche Oper Berlin has taken on an increasingly important role in the activities of the opera house, with all child chorus parts in Deutsche Oper works now performed by the Children's Chorus. These include CARMEN, TOSCA, CARMINA BURANA, LA BOHEME, HANSEL AND GRETEL, OTHELLO, TURANDOT and the solos in TOSCA and MACBETH. During the 2012/2103 season the Chorus will feature prominently in THE CUNNING LITTLE VIXEN and also give performances in its own right. With its performances and concerts on the Deutsche Oper stage, in the Kammermusiksaal of the Philharmonie and at other venues, the Chorus delivers pieces ranging in style from baroque to modern pop.
Two Christmas concerts have established themselves as regular features on the programme in the Advent period: in the early Spring of 2013 the Children's Chorus will be premiering its first-ever children's opera production of Juliane Klein's SOMETHING ELSE in the Tischlerei.
The Children's Chorus of the Deutsche Oper Berlin currently comprises approximately 100 members, sub-divided into the "Little Chorus" and "Big Chorus", which is also involved in opera performances and concerts. What are the requirements for membership? Above all, the children should have a love of music and a love of singing. Children should be physically fit and enjoy the process of learning tunes and lyrics, regardless of difficulty or simplicity, and be bold and robust enough to take to the stage of the Deutsche Oper Berlin.

Opernmäuse
Opernmäuse

(c) Dorothea Tuch
Children's opera for 5-9 year-olds.
Curiosity may kill the cat but it can't touch our Opernmäuse ('opera mice') as they set about exploring the Deutsche Oper Berlin, participating in workshops, getting behind-the-scenes insights into the workings of various departments, watching as older children rehearse and even getting to know singers and musicians. In no time at all they've become experts on the ins and outs of musical theatre. Our mice get together once a month on average, so what are you waiting for? Mäuse meetings are held approx. once a month from September 2012, on various days of the week.
Club subscription is €20.
Space is limited.

Youth Club backstage ...
...brings youngsters into contact with opera! Since the spring of 2009 the Youth Club of the Deutsche Oper Berlin has been a focal point for 15-30 year-olds who have developed an interest in opera or are in the process of discovering its delights. We organise our own varied programme of events. Around eight times a season we gather to attend an opera, take a tour or sit in on an orchestra or opera rehearsal. At sit-down gatherings we rub shoulders with artists and staff of the opera house. Through our affiliation to the "Juvenilia" umbrella organisation we also interact with the youth-club organisations of other European opera houses. New members are always welcome. Experience the world of opera for an annual subscription of just €15.
Youth Club onstage ...
... A club for fans of musical theatre: This season the Youth Club is organising its first-ever active group, a musical theatre lab for rehearsing, testing ideas out and researching. Young people get an insight into how a musical theatre project evolves and at the end present their finished product on the big stage. This is the club for all those who have an urge to act! Intensive rehearsals are held in the second week of the Easter holidays and over Pentecost; the big night comes at the beginning of June. Registration fee: €15 (on top of Youth Club subscription).

Tours through the opera house
What does a stage manager do? What does scenery look like from the back? Why does the orchestra sit in the pit? The answers to these and other questions are largely self-evident to people taking a tour backstage at the Deutsche Oper. Tours are available to school and kindergarten groups aged 4 and over. Size of group: min. 15, max. 30. Duration: 30-90 mins depending on theme and age of participants.
Sitting in on rehearsals
It's not just for amateurs that the saying 'practice makes perfect' holds true. The road to the opening night is long and involves much disciplined rehearsing …and many ideas on how to stage the production founder along the way. School children now have a chance to observe the composer and/or the director as they rehearse. Duration: 10-60 mins depending on production, structure of rehearsal and age of participants.
Practical workshop
Before they see an opera, groups can attend a workshop and, by applying musical theatre's Scenic Interpretation method, work out their own approach to the piece and have fun exploring the opera's situations and characters. In the opera house or on school premises. Duration: min. 2 classroom hours.
Talks, before or after seeing an opera
We can organise an introductory talk and a follow-up discussion in the opera house or on school premises. Duration: 1-2 classroom hours.
School classes sponsor a production
A school class may decide to follow the development of a production, perhaps focusing on a particular aspect of the piece. The project allows pupils to have direct contact with the makers. Tours, talks and workshops provide further insights into the world of opera. Approx. 4 meetings in the opera house or on school premises. We are very happy to advise teachers on how to prepare for an evening at the opera with a class of school children and how such a visit might be followed up. We recommend our free accompanying programme, which we will put together from the modules below after consulting you on your requirements. Beyond the standard ticket price, there is no further charge.
